Skin Diseases in Females

Introduction

This book covers dermatological and related esthetic concerns specific to female patients. Since knowing what’s normal is as important as knowing what’s not, first chapters covers physiological differences in the skin of women and the changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Certain commonly encountered dermatoses are more frequent in females – chronic telogen effluvium, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, pigmented contact (cosmetic) dermatitis, etc., which are explained in a more focused manner. Dermatoses exclusive to females involving the vulva is discussed at length. These include common papulosquamous conditions such as psoriasis, lichen planus, and lichen sclerosus as well as the uncommon but challenging plasma cell vulvitis. Breast dermatoses also are predominantly encountered in women and are described in detail in this book.  Importantly, the safety of drugs and biologics in pregnancy and lactation have been covered too.

One section is dedicated to the emotional and psychological burden of skin disease in women and certain disorders requiring psychiatric intervention such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (trichotillomania, trichotemnomania) and body dysmorphic disorder. Furthermore, commonly used cosmeceuticals and frequently performed esthetic procedures such as chemical peels, botulinum toxin, and soft tissue augmentation (fillers) are well explained.

Skin diseases in females can cause a significant emotional and psychological impact that can sometimes be more serious than the physical impact. There is a paucity of comprehensive published literature in both journal and books and this book aims to fill that gap. This book is meant as a resource for dermatology residents and trainees, practitioners, and teachers.

Image-Guided Aesthetic Treatments

Introduction

This book offers a detailed and up-to-date overview of image-guided aesthetic treatments. A wide range of aesthetic image-guided procedures in different body regions are described in more than twenty chapters. For each procedure, the benefits of image guidance are identified and its use is clearly explained. The coverage includes all the major tools commonly employed by today’s aesthetic and plastic surgeons, such as spectral imaging, laser, microfocused ultrasound, and radiofrequency technologies. Image guidance of aesthetic treatments has a variety of benefits: Image-guided treatment by means of non-surgical or minimally invasive modalities greatly reduces patient anxiety and the likelihood of postoperative disfigurement. Image guidance allows the physician to measure the skin thickness and the depth of fat tissue and to evaluate the elasticity of the skin and subcutaneous tissues, improving thermal treatment outcomes. It can also map the arteries, veins, and nerves, thereby providing preoperative landmarks and permitting reduction of postoperative bleeding and avoidance of nerve damage. Furthermore, imaging can non-invasively identify subdermal fillers or implants, assisting in the identification of migration with attendant vascular compromise or nerve entrapment. Image-Guided Aesthetic Treatments will be a valuable guide and reference not only for aesthetic practitioners, plastic surgeons, and other specialists, but also for imaging technicians and interested laypersons.

Handbook of Psychodermatology

Introduction

This book provides valuable information to increase confidence in proper, effective management of patients with psychodermatolic conditions. Patients with psychocutaneous disease may present to multiple professionals to seek care. The multidimensional nature of the conditions can lead to specialists being fearful of how to properly manage patients. With the information provided in this book, healthcare providers can increase their comfort and become less hesitant when making decisions determining the proper treatment course and assessing the need for referral.

Due to the cross-disciplinary nature of this topic, this book will have a large target audience:

  • Healthcare providers from multiple diverse fields such as, but not limited to, family medicine, dermatology, and psychiatry.
  • Dermatologists, Psychiatrists, general practitioners, dermatology and psychiatry residents, physician’s assistants, nurses, psychologists, and medical students with exposure to patients with psychocutaneous conditions and/or a special interest in the field may also benefit from the presented material.
  • Professors, educators, and researchers with an interest in psychodermatology or interdisciplinary medicine

The Handbook of Psychodermatology will be a powerful resource as an aid in creating coursework material for undergraduate medical students specifically for psychiatry and/or dermatology lectures. In addition, it will be useful to graduate medical education teams creating curriculums for incoming residents in psychiatry, dermatology, family medicine, and pediatrics.

European Handbook of Dermatological Treatments

Introduction

This completely updated 4th edition now includes two volumes: it retains the easy-to-use handbook format of the previous successful book, while fulfilling the need for a review of the content. Taking into consideration recent advances in systemic and topical treatments, state-of-the-art lasers, and the latest evidence-based recommendations, it now includes biologic agents for psoriasis and their use as off-label treatments in other skin disorders, targeted agents for malignant melanoma and basal cell carcinoma, and new treatment modalities for rosacea, acne, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria, to name but a few.

The European Handbook of Dermatological Treatments provides concise, up-to-date overviews of treatment guidelines and clinical pearls for a large number of skin diseases. It is divided into three main sections addressing the many different skin diseases, the drugs available for dermatological treatments, and the various methods applied in dermatology, including fillers, botulinum toxin, lasers, dermoscopy, cryosurgery, and electrosurgery. Written by a recognized expert in the field, each chapter focuses on a particular skin disease, illustrating current treatments while providing a brief synopsis of the etiology and clinical presentation of the disease. Treatment indications and contraindications, modes of action, and dosages are clearly identified and the content is enhanced by a wealth of clinical pictures and tables, making it an engaging tool for professionals, and a valuable learning resource for young practitioners, as well as postgraduate students and residents.

Androgenetic Alopecia From A to Z

Introduction

This third of three related volumes is structured in 3 sections and 46 chapters covering every aspect of Hair Restoration Surgery (HRS), alternative and future treatments for AGA/FPHL, as well as hair loss concealment and hair care. The reader will find dedicated chapters on every aspect of HRS: from the initial, “prehistoric” HRS techniques that have cosmetically stigmatized countless patients and defamed the field to in-depth coverage of all modern HRS techniques endorsing a “cosmetic revolution”. Modern HRS techniques that offer results indistinguishable from natural hair in male and female patients are described in detail, with invaluable surgical pearls and strategies on how to treat complications, repair substandard results and even how to build a successful HRS practice. Chapters include more than a thousand original and unique full-color photos of unique cases, figures, tables, and invaluable surgical tips.

The safety and applicability of Low Level Laser Therapy, Genetic Engineering/Gene Therapy, Stem Cell Therapy, Hair Follicle Cloning, Platelet Rich Plasma, Scalp Microneedling and Exosomes on AGA/FPHL are thoroughly reviewed in dedicated chapters, validated by several updated and balanced literature citations.

All types of cover-up products that can “camouflage” baldness are reviewed in detail through the author’s  vast experience in their clinical use. An elaborate chapter on hair prosthesis and wigs illustrates how patients with extensive AGA can have a natural appearance and unrestricted life. The psychological entrapment, social awkwardness, hidden costs, and downsides of the wig industry are assessed. Finally, details on hair hygiene and how they can drastically affect hair loss are offered in a separate chapter. Handy, thorough, and practical, Androgenetic Alopecia From A to Z, Hair Restoration Surgery and Alternative Treatments Volume 3 will meet the needs of dermatologists, plastic surgeons, general practitioners, and all other physicians involved in this fast growing and fascinating field.

Allergic to Life

Introduction

This easy-to-read title provides a comprehensive discussion of the major changes in daily life that have led to states of increased bodily inflammation.  Indeed, today there is an epidemic of allergic and autoimmune disease in the first and developing world. While outdoor climate change is now considered common knowledge, the impact of longer work hours, artificial lighting, increased food shelf life, and changes to the microbiome all have made a large impact in increasing allergies worldwide.  An allergy, best defined as a “damaging response from the Immune system due to a substance in the environment,” starts with warning signals, or generalized “symptoms,” that are caused by something in the environment.  Itching, aches, pains, swelling, coughing, and fatigue are all immune responses.

Written in an engaging — and often humorous — style by an allergist/immunologist, the first three chapters outline how the humanbody is in an unquestionably harmful environment, and that, in general, the immune system is just doing its job.  In subsequent chapters, the specific topics contributing to allergies are covered in detail, starting with microorganisms and a focus on indoor living. Dust mites, for example, are addressed in one full chapter — and for good reason.  The past few decades have seen an explosion of climate controlled, humidified indoor airspace that is ideally suited for more mass production of mites.

In the end, emphasizes the author, all roads of inflammation from the environment lead to the “mast cell compartment.” The stress responses of the body summarily drive up this compartment and have led to a world-wide prevalence of between 14% to 17% of “mast cell activation syndrome.”  While genetics and comorbid conditions are important in any symptom or disease process, the mast cell compartment feeds and grows off all the major environmental changes of the past 50 or so years. This is why the human body in the 21st century is in a low level state of “rejection,” of the world, says the author. Most of these changes are irreversible, but the situation is not hopeless. Understanding how the body changes itself in response to its environment will allow controlled desensitization to the environment.  Allergic to Life: How the Human Body Rejects the Modern World serves as a concise and lively text for clinicians and general readers interested in a deep, expert dive into the world of allergy and immunology.

Dermatoscopic Atlas of Non-Pigmented Lesions

Introduction

This book describes the use of dermatoscopy to diagnose a wide spectrum of non-pigmented skin diseases. This is particularly important as the absence of pigment renders these lesions particularly challenging to diagnose. The book uses clinical cases, modeling when a dermatologist is presented with a patient presenting with non-pigmented lesions. Dermatoscopy opens a new and very wide field of skin appearance that cannot be seen with the naked eye and, with appropriate training and the use of this book, improves clinical diagnosis of non-pigmented lesions.

Dermatoscopic Atlas of Non-Pigmented Lesions: Case-based Analysis and Management Options adds significantly to the analysis of cases from the editors’ previous volumes by teaching the technique through specially selected, complex and interesting clinical cases and providing the reader a thorough understanding of the techniques and methodologies associated with diagnosis using dermatoscopy. This book represents avaluable addition to pre-existing literature and enhance clinicians to expand their dermatoscopic skills and improve their daily practice.
